Dieser Film entstand auf Grundlage der Ausstellung Die Gegenwart fragt, die Geschichte antwortet. Diese wurde 2025 von den Mitgliedern des Amöeba Collective in der Karlskirche präsentiert. Ausgehend von persönlichen Erfahrungen und Erinnerungen setzen sie sich mit dem weltweiten Rechtsruck auseinander.
Der Film besteht aus neun Fragen und den jeweiligen Antworten der Mitglieder. Dazwischen erscheinen immer wieder kurze Ausschnitte ihrer Live-Performances.
Auf die Fragen reagieren die Mitglieder mal zögernd, mal nachdenklich, mal entschlossen. Die Fragen richten sich jedoch nicht allein an die Mitglieder des Kollektivs. Auch die Zuschauer*innen sind eingeladen, diesen Fragen nachzugehen und eigene Antworten zu formulieren.

This film is based on the exhibition The Present Asks, History Answers. The exhibition (original title: Die Gegenwart fragt, die Geschichte antwortet) was presented by the members of the Amöeba Collective at Karlskirche in 2025. Drawing on personal experiences and memories, they explore the global rise of the far right.
The film is structured around nine questions and the members’ responses. Throughout the film, short excerpts from their live performances are interwoven with the interviews.
The members respond to the questions with hesitation, thoughtfulness, or determination. Yet these questions are not addressed solely to the collective. The audience, too, is invited to reflect on these questions and to formulate their own answers.

이 영화는 2025년 카셀의 카를교회(Karlskirche)에서 '아메바콜렉티브(Amöeba Collective)' 멤버들이 선보인 전시 *현재가 묻고 역사가 답하다*(Die Gegenwart fragt, die Geschichte antwortet)를 바탕으로 합니다. 이들은 인터뷰 질문지 앞에서 각자의 개인적 경험과 기억을 토대로 독일사회의 우경화를 다시한번 깨닫습니다.
영화는 아홉 가지 질문과 이에 대한 멤버들의 각기 다른 답변으로 구성되며, 중간중간 이들의 라이브 퍼포먼스 장면이 짧게 삽입됩니다.
멤버들은 각각의 질문에 대해 때로는 재빨리 응답하지 못하고 깊은 생각에 잠기거나, 질문의 속내에 혼란스러워하거나, 혹은 단호하게 대답하는 등 꽤 다양한 반응을 보입니다. 이 질문들은 단지 아메바콜렉티브 멤버들에게만 던져진 게 아닙니다. 영화를 보는 관객들 또한 이 질문들에 대한 자신만의 답을 내리면서 자신이 속한 이 사회를 한번 더 돌아보게 될 것입니다.

In einem dunklen Raum schreibt eine Person ununterbrochen den Wortlaut von Artikel 1 Absatz 1 des Grundgesetzes der Bundesrepublik Deutschland —“Die Würde des Menschen ist unantastbar”— an eine ganze Wand. Die Szene wechselt in einen hellen Raum, in dem zwei Personen auf wackeligen Stühlen sitzen, aufstampfen oder wiederholt zwischen Sitzen und Aufstehen wechseln.
Das Interview beginnt mit einer Frage zu roter und blauer Kleidung. Es folgen weitere Fragen zu Kleidung im Militärstil, zum Winken unter Freunden, zur Wahrnehmung von Nationalflagge und Nationalhymne, zu Erfahrungen als Minderheit und mit Rassismus, zu Reaktionen auf Demonstrationen der extremen Rechten sowie zur Bereitschaft, im Kriegsfall Militärdienst zu leisten. Die Befragten erscheinen dabei mal versunken in Gedanken, mal irritiert, mal entschlossen.
Zwischen den Fragen und Antworten wechseln sich die Interviewsequenzen immer wieder mit Ausschnitten aus Live-Performances des Amöeba Collective ab.
Nach der letzten Frage und Antwort werden weitere Fragen, die von einem Mitglied selbst eingesprochen wurden, vor dem Hintergrund von Szenen aus der Ausstellung des Kollektivs im Jahr 2025 langsam vorgelesen. Der Film endet mit diesen offenen Fragen.

A person continuously writes the text of Article 1, Paragraph 1 of the German Basic Law —“Human dignity shall be inviolable”— onto an entire wall in a dark room. The scene shifts to a bright room, where two people sit on unstable chairs, stamping their feet or repeatedly moving between sitting and standing.
The interview begins with a question about red and blue clothing. It is followed by further questions concerning military-style clothing, waving among friends, the perception of national flags and national anthems, experiences as a minority and with racism, reactions to demonstrations by the far right, and the willingness to perform military service in the event of war. The interviewees appear at times absorbed in thought, confused, or determined.
Between questions and answers, the film repeatedly cuts to excerpts from live performances by the Amöeba Collective, before returning to the interview scenes.
After the final question and answer, additional questions—voiced by one of the members—are slowly read aloud over scenes from the collective’s 2025 exhibition. The film ends with these open questions.

어두운 방 안, 한 사람이 벽면 전체에 독일 기본법 제1조 1항 “인간의 존엄은 침해될 수 없다”를 끊임없이 적어 내려갑니다. 장면이 밝은 방으로 바뀌면, 불안정한 의자에 앉은 두 사람이 발을 구르거나 앉았다 일어서기를 반복하는 모습이 보입니다.
인터뷰는 빨간색과 파란색 의상에 관한 질문으로 시작됩니다. 이어 군복 스타일의 복장, 친구들 사이의 손인사, 국기와 국가에 대한 인식, 소수자로서 겪은 경험과 인종차별, 극우 세력의 시위에 대한 반응, 그리고 전쟁 시 병역 이행 의지 등에 관한 질문들이 이어집니다. 인터뷰 대상자들은 때때로 깊은 생각에 잠기거나 혼란스러워하기도 하고, 또 때로는 결연한 태도를 보이기도 합니다.
질문과 답변이 오가는 사이사이, 영화는 '아메바 콜렉티브(Amöeba Collective)'의 라이브 공연 장면을 삽입했다가 다시 인터뷰 장면으로 돌아옵니다.
마지막 문답이 끝난 후, 콜렉티브의 2025년 전시 장면 위로 멤버 중 한 명의 목소리가 추가 질문들을 천천히 낭독합니다. 영화는 이러한 열린 질문들을 남기며 막을 내립니다.

This woman has a swollen head and is sitting uncomfortably for a long time on stilts.
Behind her, there were (and still are) countless women who were forced to spend their youth as comfort women by the Japanese military during WWII.
Without an apology or compensation from the Japanese government, each individual comfort woman remains psychologically trapped in the battlefields.

Diese Frau hat einen geschwollenen Kopf und hockt unruhig auf Stelzen.
Hinter ihr gab es (und gibt es) unzählige Frauen, die gezwungen wurden, ihre Jugend als Trostfrauen für das japanische Militär während des Zweiten Weltkriegs zu verbringen.
Ohne Entschuldigung und ohne Entschädigung von der japanischen Regierung bleibt jede einzelne Trostfrau noch immer psychisch mitten auf den Schlachtfeldern gefangen.

그녀의 머리는 부풀어 오릅니다. 그녀는 불안하게 죽마 위에 앉아 있습니다.
전쟁은 끝이 났지만 여전히 그녀의 뒤에는 제2차세계대전 중 일본 군대에 의해 위안부로 강제동원된 수많은 여성들이 있습니다.
일본 정부로부터 어떤 사과나 배상도 없이, 위안부 여성들은 지금도 여전히 전쟁터의 한복판에 서있습니다.

The Statue of Peace symbolizes the victims of comfort women who were subjected to sexual slavery by the Japanese military during WWII.
On June 18, 2024, Initiative Save Nujin, Korea Verband, and the AStA of the University of Kassel invited the university president, who had demolished this small statue, to present a petition with 5,804 signatures demanding the statue's reinstatement.
Unfortunately, she firmly refused to negotiate. Is there still any humanity left on this earth?

Die Statue des Friedens symbolisiert die Opfer der sogenannten "Trostfrauen", die während des Zweiten Weltkriegs sexueller Sklaverei durch das japanische Militär ausgesetzt waren.
Am 18. Juni 2024 luden die Initiative Save Nujin, der Korea Verband und der AStA der Universität Kassel die Universitätspräsidentin ein, die diese kleine Statue abgerissen hatte, um ihr eine Petition mit 5.804 Unterschriften zu überreichen, die die Wiederaufstellung der Statue fordert.
Leider weigerte sie sich entschieden, Verhandlungen aufzunehmen. Gibt es auf diesem Planeten noch Menschlichkeit?

평화의 소녀상은 제2차세계대전 중 일본군에 의해 성노예로 끌려간 위안부 피해자들을 상징합니다.
2024년 6월 18일, Initiative Save Nujin, Korea Verband, 그리고 카셀대학교 AStA는 이 작은 동상을 철거한 대학총장을 초대하여 동상의 재설치를 요구하는 5,804명의 서명이 담긴 청원을 제출했습니다.
그러나 그녀는 단호히 협상을 거부했습니다. 이 땅에 과연 인류애가 남아있는 걸까요?

Vernissage of the exhibit "THE INVISIBLE"

 

Initiative SAVE NUJIN, students of Kunsthochschule Kassel und local artists held an exhibition in Kassel for three weeks.
The exhibition was not only about the historical significance of the "Statue of Peace, Nujin" that was demolished in Kassel, but also about women's rights and anti-war issues.
Each participant expressed their political stance against the removal of the statue by Kassel University or their personal feelings about the human rights abuses that still occur in wars around the world.
The exhibition was held at Mimikri Kassel e.V. from 29.05.2024 to 14.06.2024.

Amöeba Collective supports the SAVE NUJIN campaign. We shot video clips in Osaka to create a new short film about the comfort women, a system of sexual slavery organized and operated by Japanese imperialism in its colonies during WWII. We will never forget the mistakes and war crimes of the past in order to build a better future.

Amöeba Collective unterstützt die SAVE NUJIN-Kampagne. Wir haben in Osaka Videoaufnahmen gemacht, um einen Kurzfilm über die „Trostfrauen“ zu erstellen, die während des Zweiten Weltkriegs systematisch von der japanischen Imperialmacht in ihren Kolonien als sexuelle Sklavinnen versklavt wurden. Wir werden die Fehler und Kriegsverbrechen der Vergangenheit niemals vergessen, um eine bessere Zukunft zu schaffen.

Amöeba Collective는 SAVE NUJIN 캠페인을 지원합니다. 우리는 오사카에서 제2차 세계 대전 동안 일본 제국주의가 식민지에서 조직하고 운영한 성노예제인 위안부에 관한 새로운 단편 영화를 제작하기 위해 영상 클립을 촬영했습니다. 우리는 더 나은 미래를 만들기 위해 과거의 실수와 전쟁 범죄를 절대 잊지 않을 것입니다.
